Essential Oils: Do They Work?

A common problem with modern medicine is that it often treats symptoms of disease and not the root cause. Most medication notoriously comes with warning labels for potential side-effects, yet we are often trained to believe that modern medicine is the primary and ideal answer to all our ails. 

Fortunately, more and more people are coming to understand that nature provides all-natural alternatives that can help address many common health issues. 

Humans have been harnessing the healing powers of nature through essential oils for more than 5,000 years.

As you probably know, essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts, understood to offer a wealth of health benefits.

Essential oils have become so popular, the industry is now worth over 10 billion dollars! [1] 

The flipside to the massive demand for essential oils is that their benefits have become exaggerated. Some go so far as to claim they can be used as a silver bullet cure for most diseases, all for the sake of making a sale. 

This, of course, isn’t true. There’s no one single solution to disease, and essential oils are not exempt from this. Healing takes a variety of factors, one of which essential oils fit into. 

This begs the question: DO essential oils actually work? 

Well there is scientific evidence that high quality, organic essential oils deserve a place in your medicine cabinet. 

Research has shown these powerful plant oils can help a variety of issues, including promoting better sleep [2], improving memory [3] and easing digestive issues. [4]

In fact there’s a growing body of evidence exploring how plant oils can support more complex issues like diabetes, cancer prevention and healing, heart health and even mental health (including degenerative issues like dementia and Alzheimer’s.) 

You can also add to the list helping with oral health, relieving pain and inflammation and supporting gut health. 

In short, a plethora of uses! And we look forward to more and more research on the topic.

So, to make things plain and simple, essential oils do work! 

Modern society has simply forgotten just how potent and beneficial they can be when used correctly and alongside a holistic approach to healing. 

When used properly and as a part of a healthy lifestyle, essential oils offer fantastic natural health support for dealing with a number of common ailments. 

As a really simple example of how you can start using oils yourself, here are three recipes to try:

1. Essential Oil Disinfectant Recipe for Cuts & Scratches
.

  • 5 drops Organic Lavender Oil
  • 3 drops Organic Peppermint Oil
  • 2 TBS Carrier Oil (jojoba, avocado, olive, coconut, grapeseed)

Blend the oils in a container that can be sealed. Rub the mixture into the affected area several times a day for an antibacterial, antimicrobial benefit. 

2. Essential Oil Recipe for Joint Pain

This essential oil recipe has shown excellent results in addressing pain from inflamed joints. [5].

  • 6 drops Organic Lavender Oil
  • 6 drops Organic Juniper Oil
  • 4 drops Organic Ylang-Ylang Oil
  • 4 drops Organic Rosemary Oil
  • 100 ml Organic Coconut Oil

Blend the oils together until well incorporated and massage into affected joints for at least 30 minutes. [6]

3. Essential Oil Recipe for Anxiety [4]
.

  • 12 drops Lavender Oil
  • 4 drops Roman Chamomile Oil
  • 1 drop Neroli Oil
  • 2 ounces Sweet Almond Oil

Mix the oils until well incorporated and place in a wide-mouthed glass jar. Use this as a post shower body oil to nourish your skin and soothe your anxiety.

So, again… Can essential oils help with common health ailments? 

ABSOLUTELY!

The important thing to remember is that essential oils aren’t a miracle cure. Treat them as you would any other medicine. That means

  • Patch testing before using to find out if you’re allergic
  • Using the CORRECT DOSE
  • Using them alongside a holistic approach to your healing 
  • Understanding that it is a tool for healing and not a cure
  • Only using really good-quality products
