Immunity is like your body’s power to defend against foreign infection or disease-causing viruses and other pathogens. Today’s featured recipe, “Immune Supporting Tropical Smoothie”, is enriched with various essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to give a boost to your immune system.

Read on to learn how the ingredients in this delicious, nutritious recipe can help strengthen your immunity.

Is There A Way To Boost Your Immune System With Food?

Whenever you come into contact with a pathogen, your immune system mounts an immune response to eliminate it from the body. An effective immune system uses inflammation to fight off injury, infection, and other damages. By causing inflammation, pathogens cannot take over your body and kill you.

However, prolonged inflammation can lead to autoimmune diseases, which result in your body attacking its own cells, as well as several other negative health results.[1] In fact, it’s thought now that inflammation is the root of most disease.

You can support your immune system to function optimally by eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and sleeping enough.

In addition, hundreds of studies have shown that certain vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants present in different fruits and vegetables can boost your immune system as well. [2]

One easy way to quickly gain the benefits to boost your immunity with food is with a quality-ingredient smoothie. Today’s Immune Supporting Tropical Smoothie with orange, mango, banana, coconut water, fresh lime juice, goji berries, hemp hearts, and chia seeds gives you a boost of energy and nutrition that also strengthens your immune system.

Moreover, it is enriched with antioxidants that aid in counteracting the effects of free radicals in the body. Antioxidants have anti-aging properties for the body, so it’s a win-win!

Here’s the breakdown of this fantastic new recipe:

Orange

Orange is a segmented citrus fruit with a pitted peel. Enriched with vitamin C and a great source of protective antioxidants, which helps protect the cells from damage.

Vitamin C increases white blood cells (immune cells) production, which is key to fighting infections.[3] They also contain health-promoting compounds known as flavonoids that improve cell communication. Improved cell communication helps direct specific cell survival pathways and a quick immune response when encountering infections[4]

Oranges are a seasonal fruit of winters but are available throughout the year. They are highly enriched with flavor and taste and a complete package of health-improving ingredients. A good source of carotenoids functions by stimulating the natural killer cells for increased immune signaling and inhibiting the inflammatory processes.[5]

Banana

Bananas contain minerals and vitamins, including potassium, magnesium, vitamin B6, and vitamin C.

Potassium is an essential nutrient that has a balancing effect on sodium. Together, they regulate nerve signals, blood pressure, and the immune system. Potassium regulates the membrane potential of the cells for the transmission of signals that help direct immune activity.[6]

Magnesium plays a vital role in the specific and nonspecific immune response. It acts as a cofactor for immunoglobulin production, the antibodies that specifically target, bind, and destroy foreign antigens.[7]

Bananas are high in vitamin B6, essential for producing cytokines and antibodies. Cytokines are the substances required to communicate between cells involved in the immune response, whereas antibodies recognize the antigens and target them for attack by WBCs.[8]

Mango

Mangoes are nutritious as much as they are delicious. Several vitamins offer great immunity shots, including vitamin A, B, C, E, K, and B6.

Vitamin A is required for a healthy immune system as its deficiency is linked to the risk of infections and aids in eyesight.[9]

Plus, one cup of mango provides nearly 75% of the daily vitamin C requirement. The vitamin can increase your body’s ability to produce white blood cells that fight disease, increase the efficiency of these cells, and enhance the defenses of your skin.[10]

Vitamin C also acts as an antioxidant and strengthens your body’s defenses by protecting the cells from free radicals. It inhibits oxidative stress and supports the cellular functions of the body’s adaptive immune system. [11]

Mango is also a good source of sugar, copper, folate, potassium, and riboflavin. Mangoes offer 18% DV for one of the essential nutrients, folates that must be present to synthesize proteins such as cytokines involved in regulating the immune response and cell-mediated immunity.[12]

Coconut Water

It is filled with highly nutritious lauric acid that has medicinal properties being an antifungal, antibacterial, and antiviral agent. It kills intestinal worms and candida bacteria while fighting infection. Plus, it improves immunity by fighting bacterial and viral infections such as the flu.

What’s more, coconut water contains potassium that helps maintain blood and cell pressure. Also, it is enriched in nutrients and vitamins such as riboflavin, thiamin, and folate that help in increasing the body’s immune strength.[13]

Lime Juice

Lime juice is the perfect ingredient that improves digestion and keeps the seasonal cold and flu at bay. Highly enriched with vitamin C and A, it provides over 20% of your daily needs.

Particularly a good source of vitamin C and folate, both play a vital role in sustaining the integrity of immunological barriers. They also support the function of many immune cells, including phagocytes, natural killer cells, T-cells, and B-cells responsible for cell-mediated immunity.[14]

Goji Berries

Goji berries, also known as Lycium barbarum, are a source of potential benefits for your body. In traditional medicine, goji berries have been used for centuries to prevent illness and infection.

They contain antioxidants and vitamins, including vitamin A & C, which are building blocks of the immune system and help prevent illness from common flu to various types of cancers.[15] In a three-month study, goji berry supplements were found to boost immune function after receiving an influenza vaccine.[16]

Hemp Hearts

Hemp seeds are very nutritious with a mild nutty flavor. These seeds are enriched with omega-3 and omega-6, which reduce inflammation. Hemp seeds have a 3:1 ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids, a ratio considered optimal and shown to support immune function.[17]

Their species is the same as cannabis, but their variety is different. Cannabidiol (CBD) interacts with the production of interleukins that are glycoproteins of the immune system and maintain your body’s natural resilience against certain infections.[18]

Chia Seeds

Chia seeds are rich in essential nutrients like iron, calcium, thiamine, manganese, fibers, antioxidants, heart-healthy omega-3, and other fatty acids. They contain quercetin that helps prevent specific health issues and reduce chronic inflammation. In addition to boosting metabolism, chia seeds help aid digestion, thereby promoting a healthier immune system and an overall fit body.[19]
